Superficial To The Max (Eng/Kor)

South Korea is much worse than Canada and the U.S. with respect to the problems you brought up in your very superficial post, and some well known South Koreans will admit it such as the free lance writer who pens the Seoul Searcher column for The Korea Herald English language newspaper. In fact, this guy is extremely critical of the status quo in South Korea. You do not do justice to Kor Sux's letter by mindlessly writing that every country is not perfect and has problems. The point here is that South Korea has an unacceptably high number of social problems and foreign residents of the country who have a stake in the place should not have to suffer in silence. It's not normal in the U.S. to be attacked by a group of whites for being an Asian and then detained by the police for a day or two for reporting the attack. This has happened to me and every other caucasian I've met who went to the police after being attacked here in South Korea. It's not normal in the U.S. and Canada to be defrauded by every employer but it is in South Korea. Employers in the U.S. do not routinely go unpunished for freely admitting to the police that they tried to murder or physically assault a foreigner who worked for them because she or he reported the employer's on-going acts of contract fraud to the Department of Labor. The U.S. and Canada do not have an incredibly high number of motels, restaurants, bars, night clubs, and coffee shops that bar foreigners from the premises because it's against the law. Here in South Korea, there are lots of them and it's considered socially acceptable and it's legal. Western nations have Affirmative Action laws that guarantee jobs and other freebies to Asians and other foreigners; Korean schools, from kindergartens to the universities, not only teach students to hate foreigners but ridicule those in their employ and those who attend them. K.A.I.S.T. is one such example where the Nobel Laureate from Stanford is, as I and so many other foreigners predicted long ago, the object of large-scale resentment because he has tried to improve the school. Two of my friends from Canada attend Yonsei University in Seoul and have horror stories about the humiliating abuse they have suffered from many students and some professors. This shit goes unpunished in South Korea but is punishable by law in the U.S. and Canada. It's not normal in the U.S. and Canada for people to label foreigners who work there as "unemployable losers" simply because they work there but it is normal for Koreans to utter such hateful insults about its foreign residents. Korean women go to the U.S. and Canada to give birth so that their kids can gain automatic citizenship and all of the economic and social advantages that go with it. Canadians and Americans do not gain automatic citizenship simply because they were born in the R.O.K. Go to any Korean city and you will find Korean companies that, without shame, sell seminars on how to defraud countries such as Canada and the U.S. who grant citizenship to all who are born there. Many of my students have admitted to me without any sense of shame that their parents moved to the U.S. to give birth so that they could get all of the social and economic advantages afforded by American citizenship. It's not normal for Asians to be routinely harshly bumped into on the streets of America and Canada but whites and blacks suffer this sort of treatment daily in South Korea. Do not try to write this off as a consequence of living in crowded Korean cities because American, Canadian. English, and Japanese cities, like New York City, Toronto, Montreal, London, Osaka, and Houston, are very heavily populated as well but do not have this hostile, anti-foreigner trait. Korean cities do not, with the exception of the small Russian outfit in Busan, have large foreign criminal gangs but many American and some Canadian cities have murderous Korean gangs. Only a tiny percentage of caucasians in North America would stare at Asians in their presence but many, many Koreans do it on a routine basis. There are so many other objectively discernible differences between Korea and North America, too. I'll post them here at another time. 지극히 피상적인...(translation) 지극히 피상적인 당신의 글에서 당신이 언급한 그런 문젯점들에 관한한 한국은 캐나다나 미국보다 훨씬 더 나쁘다. 코리아헤럴드 신문의 Seoul Searcher 컬럼을 쓰는 프리랜서 작가 같은 그런 몇몇의 저명한 한국인들도 그렇다는 점을 인정할 것이다. 당신은 모든 나라가 완벽하지 않으며 문젯점들이 있다고 생각없는 글을 써댐으로써 Kor Sux의 글을 제대로 평가하지 못했다. 여기서의 요점은 한국은 받아들이기 어려울 정도의 많은 수의 사회적 문젯점들이 있으며 그 곳에 이해관계가 걸린 한국내의 외국인 거주자들은 침묵 속에서 견디어내야만 해서는 안된다는 것이다. 미국에서는 아시아인이란 이유로 백인 집단에게 공격을 당한 후에 그 피해를 보고하느라 하루 혹은 이틀을 경찰서에 붙들려 있는다는 것은 정상이 아니다. 이런 일이 나에게 일어났으며 이곳 한국에서 공격 당한 후 경찰서에 갔던 내가 만나본 백인들 모두에게 일어났다. 미국과 캐나다에선 모든 고용주들에게 사취를 당한다는 것은 정상이 아니지만 한국에선 정상이다. 고용주의 계약위반 사기행각인 현행범죄를 노동부에 고발했다고해서 자신을 위해 일했던 외국인들을 살해하려하거나 육체적으로 공격하려고 하였음을 경찰에 마음 놓고 시인하고서도 상습적으로 처벌을 받지 않는다는 것은 미국의 고용주들에겐 있을 수 없는 일이다. 미국이나 캐나다에는 모텔, 식당, 술집, 나이트클럽, 커피숖에서 외국인들을 출입금지 시키는 곳이 엄청나게 많지가 않다. 위법이기 때문이다. 이곳 한국에선 그런 곳들이 매우 많으며 그것이 사회적으로 용납되는 것으로 보이며 위법이 아니다. 서구 국가들은 아시아인들과 다른 외국인들에게 일자리와 다른 특혜를 보장하는 소수민족우대법들을 갖고 있다. 반면에 한국의 학교들은 유치원부터 대학교에 이르기까지 학생들에게 외국인들을 싫어하도록 가르칠 뿐 아니라, 그 학교에 고용되어 있거나 그 학교를 다니는 외국인들을 조롱하도록 하게까지 가르친다. 스탠포드 출신의 Nobdl Laureate이 있는 KAIST가 그 일례이다. 나와 다른 많은 외국인들이 오래전에 예견했듯이 그는 그 학교의 개선을 위해 노력했다고해서 대대적 적대감의 대상이 되었다. 캐나다 출신의 내 친구 두명은 서울의 연세대에 다니는데 자신들이 많은 학생들과 몇몇 교수들로 부터 겪은 굴욕적인 모욕에 대한 끔찍한 이야기들을 갖고 있다. 이런 개판행각이 한국에서는 처벌 없이 지나간다. 하지만 미국과 캐나다에서는 법으로 처벌을 받는다. 미국과 캐나다에서는 사람들이 그곳서 일하는 외국인들을 단지 그들이 한국서 일한다고 해서 "(자국에서는) 취직도 못할 패배자들" 이라고 레떼르를 붙이는 것은 정상이 아니다. 하지만 한국인들이 한국에 거주하는 외국인들에게 그런 적대적인 모욕을 퍼붓는 것은 정상이다. 한국 여성들은 자신들의 자녀가 자동으로 시민권과 그에 수반되는 모든 경제적, 사회적 특혜를 얻을 수 있도록 하기위해 미국과 캐나다로 가서 출산을 한다. 캐나다인과 미국인들은 단지 대한민국에서 태어났다고해서 자동적으로 시민권을 얻지는 못한다. 한국의 어느 도시이건 가보라. 창피한 줄도 모르고 자국에서 출생하는 사람에게 시민권을 주는 미국이나 캐나다 같은 그런 나라들을 사취하는 법에 대해 세미나를 열고 있는 한국 회사들을 볼 것이다. 내가 가르치는 많은 학생들이 아무런 부끄러움도 안느끼며 내게 털어 놓는다. 미국시민권으로 제공받는 모든 사회적 경제적 특혜를 얻기 위해 자기 부모들이 애 낳으러 미국에 갔다고 말이다. 아시아인들이 길거리에서 미국인들과 캐나다인들에게 상습적으로 심하게 부딪히는 것은 정상이 아니다. 그러나 한국에서는 흑인이나 백인이나 날마다 이런 대접을 받는다. 인구가 많은 한국의 도시에 살기 때문에 발생하는 일이라고 얼버무리려하지 마라. 미국, 캐나다, 영국, 일본의 도시들 즉 뉴욕, 터론토, 몬트리얼, 런던, 오사카, 휴스턴 같은 도시들은 마찬가지로 엄청난 인구로 붐빈다. 하지만 이런 적대적이고 안티외국인적 특색은 없다. 예외적으로 부산에서 소규모 러시아인 패거리들이 활동하고 있긴 하지만, 한국의 도시에는 대규모 외국인 조직폭력배들이 없다. 그러나 많은 미국과 몇몇 캐나다 도시에는 흉악한 한국인 갱들이 있다. 북미에는 단지 미미한 퍼센트의 백인들이 아시아인들을 면전에서 노려본다. 그러나 매우 많은 한국인들이 상습적으로 그렇게들 한다. 그외에도 한국과 북미와는 다른 아주 많은 객관적으로 구분되는 차이점들이 존재한다. 그것에 대해서는 다음 기회에 이곳에 다시 글을 올리겠다. |
