Red Hot - 레드핫
“All Shook Up(완전히 흥분한,들뜬)”이라는 Rock'n Roll 음악이 경쾌하게 울려 퍼지는 가운데 카메라가 Daugava 강의 표면을 가로질러 Latvia의 수도인 Riga의 스카이라인을 보여주는 것으로 영화는 시작됩니다. 아직은 여전히 암울한 분위기가 풍겨나는 구소련의 도시 정경과 록큰롤의 상징인물인 Elvis의 제목 만큼이나 들뜬 분위기의 노래가 묘한 조합을 이루며 앞으로 전개될 스토리를 상징적으로 예고 해주는 장면이죠. 간단히 요약하자면, Red Hot은 록큰롤을 퇴폐적 서구사회의 타락한 유행(a degenerate fad of the decadent West)으로 간주하던 1959년의 소련 사회 속에서 사랑과 록큰롤에 처음 눈을 뜨면서 들뜨고 흥분해하는 젊은이들의 사랑과 꿈을 그린 영화라고 할 수 있습니다. 천재적 재능의 음악학도인 주인공 Alxis Fadris는 업무차 외국에 다녀온 삼촌 디미트리로 부터 선물을 받습니다. Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, Fat Domino 등의 진귀한 싱글판들(45 rpm Records) 이죠. 그야말로 금단의 열매인 록큰롤(the forbidden fruit of American rock ‘n’ roll) 맛을 본 알렉시는 흥분을 감추지 못하고 친구들과 더불어 비밀스런 음악활동을 시작합니다. 사샤, 유리,블라드와 더불어 철의 장막 속에서 최초의 록큰롤 밴드가 될 꿈을 꾸게 된 것입니다. 네 학생들은 버려진 공장 건물을 연습스튜디오로 만들기로 결심합니다. (a quartet of students decides to turn a deserted industrial building into a rehearsal studio) 그 와중에 사샤는 해적판을 만들어서 팔고(Sasha begins bootlegging the cream of Alexi's record collection), 가난한 집안 출신의 알렉시는 Valentina Kirov라는 KBG 고위관리의 딸과 사랑에 빠짐으로서 스토리는 더 복잡해지죠 (complicating the story are Alexi’s humble roots and his evolving love affair with Valentina Kirov, the privileged daughter of a highly placed KGB colonel). 좁혀오는 수사망 속에서, 결국 최초이자 마지막이 된 콘서트 현장에서 당국에 체포된 알렉시는 우여곡절 끝에 사랑하는 발렌티나와 함께 미국으로 망명을 하게 된다는 내용으로 이야기는 끝을 맺습니다. 야심 넘치는 KGB의 부하 한 명이 음악적 반체제 운동으로 사건을 몰아가면서 권력에 대한 욕심을 부리지 않았더라면 단순한 아이들 문제로 끝날 스토리죠. (It’s all just kid stuff until an overambitious KGB underling decides cracking a case of musical anti-Soviet propaganda might lead to his rise in power.) 따라서 복잡하고 흥미진진한 스토리 전개가 대종을 이루는 다른 영화들에 익숙해진 비평가들 눈에는 저항하는 젊음을 다룬 예측 가능한 스토리(predicatable story of rebel youth) 정도로 비춰질 수도 있습니다. 그래서인지 몰라도 상투적(formulaic) 이라는 혹평과 더불어 대중적 성공을 이루지 못한채 잊혀져 가는 영화입니다. 웹을 찾아도 피상적인 정보(cursory information)만 나오고 영화해설목록(filmographies)이나 비디오가게(video stores)에서 조차도 자취를 찾아보기 힘든 영화죠. 영화감독인 Paul Haggis가 캐나다인이라는 것이 크게 작용하지 않았을까 추측합니다만 이곳 TV에서 우연히나마 볼 수 있게 된게 얼마나 기쁘고 다행한 일인지 모릅니다. 제게 만큼은 어떤 명화 못지 않게 마음을 사로잡는 무언가가 이 영화에 있었기 때문입니다. 무엇을 좋아하는 마음이란 어찌보면 왠지 모르게 그냥 좋은 느낌이 든다는게 가장 맞는 말이겠지만, 말로 표현하려니 다음 몇 가지가 우선 떠오르는군요. 첫째는 록큰롤로 상징되는 젊음입니다. 어찌보면 다소 경박함을 느끼게 까지 만드는 음악인 록큰롤은 빠르고 경쾌하고 리듬감이 넘치는 음악이죠. 명쾌한 멜로디는 쉬운만큼이나 거침없이 빠르게 가슴에 파고 들며 기분을 바꿔 놓습니다. 그러나 저는 록큰롤의 진정한 매력을 가수들의 열정적 연주에서 찾고 싶습니다. 요즘의 세련된 편곡으로 꽉 채워진 음악들에 비하면 아주 단순한 수준의 음악인 록큰롤이 그토록 대단한 인기와 사랑을 받을 수 있었던 진정한 이유는 바로 다듬어지지 않은 채 토해내던 당시 가수들의 열정적 연주 때문이라고 생각합니다. 음악에 관한한은 사실 더 이상의 어떤 미사여구도 무의미 합니다. 이번 클립에 나온 Jackie Wilson이나 Jerry Lee Lewis의 연주를 직접 들어보십시오. 얼마나 열정과 생명력이 넘치는 곡들인지를.... Jackie Wilson/Reet Petite Jerry Lee Lewis - Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On (끝부분에 노랫말 수록하였음) 아쉽게도 Jackie의 곡은 실황장면이 없어서 목소리에 담긴 생명력 만을 느끼셨을테지만, Jerry Lee Lewis는 이제 보셔서 아실겁니다. 노래 한곡에 가수가 얼마나 많은 열정을 쏟아부으며 연주를 하는지를 말입니다. 피아노 때문에 앉아서 연주할 수 밖에 없다는게 화가 난다는 Jerry Lee Lewis의 말에 공감을 느끼지 않으시나요? 이처럼 이 영화에서는 젊은이들의 열정과 생명감이 느껴집니다. 록큰롤 이라는 젊음의 음악을 통해서 자연스럽게 말입니다. 어두운 사회에서 클래식이라는 무거운 음악을 공부하는 학생들이 듣는 록큰롤이기에 그 상대적 강도는 더 강렬해 보입니다. 둘째는 아직 어린 나이라 여지가 남아있겠지만 신선한 주인공들 모습입니다. 깔끔한 마스크에 우수를 느끼게 하는 남자 주인공의 모습과 지적 감성적 분위기의 여주인공의 모습이 무척이나 보기 좋았습니다. 특히 얼핏 차가와 보이지만 숨어있는 열정이 느껴지는 여주인공의 자신감과 품위가 배어있는 자태에서는 세상이 아는 그런 미인들과는 비교를 넘어서는, 아주 특별한 여성상으로 자라날 것 같은 기대감을 주기에 충분한 싹이 엿보입니다. 셋째는 영화 전체를 흐르는 음악적 분위기 입니다. 클래식과 팝을 오가며 흐르는 영화의 음악적 분위기가 가끔씩 다시 보고 싶게 만드는 이 영화의 숨은 매력이 아닐까 하는 생각도 문득 들었습니다. 마지막으로 젊은이들다운 무모할 정도의 순수성 입니다. Have you ever had take a risk for anything what you wanted entire your life? Or does your mother buy that when you need?
