First sorry for what happened to you today sounds like the Koreans have learned something from the US anti-abortion movement, great just what we needed.
Few things struck me about this:
1) Your closing comments were wonderful. Great analogy to the US doctor killed last year, I totally forgot about that case. There hasn't been much noise from the US about that except some stuff I read on Daves last year. Americans defitely took the high road on this one, I also blame the US media for not talking this one up, they seemed to be obsessed with Gary Condit at the time. Koreans need to learn something from this
2) I agree with your outrage about the postcards this IS NOT the way to influence people. Koreans need to learn a little about tact and sensitivity. What about the Osama cartoon ad for that newspaper that runs on a jumbotron near the US Embassy? that one turns my stomach because I have cousins who work in the NYPD in the precinct where the WTC was located (they were off duty 9/11 at the time but where there within hours) and I have other relatives who worked in the WTC who but by the grace of God were off that day. I don't go out and protest every day about this
3) Don't know to be mad or glad your students were getting involved, I'm also not sure if I would of gotten them the White House Zip code either because those postcards were so graphic. Yeah I'm glad to see them interested in something other than pop music or video games but I get the feeling this is a "herd mentality" thing. Did you ask them some serious questions about this? Try and get them to do some critical thinking about this, maybe we can get them to give a damm about other things. Your students remind me of some right-to-life protesters I had to deal with while working on the Mondale campaign in 1984 (yeah I'm that old and I do pick winners huh?) they were prostesting Geraldine Ferraro's appearence because "their pastor told them she was for killing babies" I asked them if their pastor told them if it was Gods will to jump of the bridge would they, they said "yes" nuff said.
Bottom line you said nicely what I've been screaming, folks this thing needs to end and end soon. You won't get your way but you've said your peace now its time to move on and deal with more serious issues like how to deal with the Norths nukes and how to deal with a failing regime in Pyongyang. Thats what we should be focusing on not shocking people with these things.
