The Ivy League Hagwon in Daegu

The Ivy League Hagwon One of the best things about working for a hagwon is that you get to meet a great many people. This includes students, fellow teachers, and other colleagues. In addition, if you do a good job as a teacher, your name will get passed around, bandied about, and not only will your class numbers swell, but offers of external employment will also come your way. These offers are frequently for private tutoring, but I have worn a number o.. -by Yoo Bum Ho

There was a time in Daegu

There Was a Time Nostalgia can be insidious. It can corrupt your thoughts and alter your behavior as you attempt to breathe life back into something that died long ago. Since one of my Daegu postings had been so convivial, so exciting years ago, I decided to return there. Both my contract and my visa were obtained in record time, so I soon found myself in the familiar surroundings of the East Daegu Railroad Station. No one was there to greet me, so I phoned the hagwon. .. -by You Bum Ho

My credentials get padded

My Credentials Get Padded After years of teaching ESL, I realized that it was time to get some more pieces of paper with which to impress my employers. The working world demands certificates and degrees as proof of competence in a field, so I decided to get another TESOL certificate. Weekend classes were offered at a university, so it was too good of a chance to pass up. Once I had paid my tuition fees, a sum not much less than the annual Zimbabwean deficit, I found m.. -by Yoo Bum Ho

Swan Song - I've had my fill of Korea

Swan Song It had to be a public school, I decided. Hagwons attracted too many cowboys, and I was tired of logging in 100-hour weeks. Of course, I admitted to myself that a boys’ middle school would be a deal-breaker, but a girls’ middle school or even a co-ed middle school had a chance of being tolerable, even pleasant. An offer came my way from a province still unexplored by me. A co-ed school in a county seat offered me an agreeable position with an attractive s.. -by Miles Long

Hong-Nong Middle School, Jeollanamdo

My year at the Hong-Nong Middle School finally ended, and what a wild ride it was. No newbie to the ESL field, that school was the nineteenth Korean public school in which I have taught. Despite the effort that I made, the treatment I was accorded was nothing short of abusive. Though I decided not to renew my contract at that school, I have decided to publicize their behavior both to deter other foreigners from applying and suffering similar abuse and to encourage the Kor.. -by Miles Long

Re..NOT ALL KOREANS LIKE NATIVE SPEAKERS!!!

I think that it's a very important point that nationality doesn't count. I've met Koreans with excellent English skills, and I have seen, for a fact, that students are very comfortable with Filipino/Filipina teachers, who also almost always have excellent English skills. I think that the only drawback would be cultural explanations or the use of slang or idioms, but at a beginning or even intermediate level, these are fairly simple, and can be easily explained by the no.. -by Jill

Things to like and dislike about Korea

-The food is delicious, and Korean restaurants are generally inexpensive. That being said, know what you order and develop an affinity for red pepper paste. -The transportation system is nothing short of phenomenal. Even though many Koreans prefer to be late for everything, you should learn that buying your tickets in advance and showing up in a.. -by Willis

Arguments for Atheism - Changwon Nam Middle School

Which type of school should I try next? The Catholic school system in Canada came to mind, so I thought of well-mannered students who were academically a cut above the rest. There is no shortage of churches in South Korea, nor is there a dearth of self-proclaimed pious people, so I threw caution to the winds one more time and signed a contract with a parochial middle school. A Christian middle school said that they wanted to hire one or two foreign native ESL in.. -by Rastus

Young man’s swearing at old man causes public uproar

http://211.234.126.12/www/news/nation/2011/06/117_89799.html Public anger is growing over a young man who in a video footage hurled a torrent of abuse at an elderly man on a subway train. Thinking of working for Korea's largest and oldest hagwon chain?

Like so many others teaching ESL in South Korea, my initial foray was in a hagwon. A school with many links in the chain appealed to me, and their history and organizational structure promised security to timid first-timers. My fears were put to rest, and initial impressions were good. The academic director at my first hagwon was a born manager, a people person, someone for whom you would walk through fire. Daejeon English Camp

Having already taught weeklong camps for middle-school students, I jumped at the chance to do so again. Bubbling with the fearless exuberance and barely contained energy of youth, they generally follow my directions, try anything, and, more often than not, do a commendable job. When I heard about the English camp in the wilds of Chung-nam, I thought that it would be the perfect setting in which to cultivate my students’ aspirations. My Hagwon: Meet the Motley Crew

Maggie was built. As soon as I found my desk for the first time and sat down across from her, I did what most men do and what most women hate: I stared at her breasts. Nationality doesn't really matter

Obviously, lots of events with a whiner are not fun, but irritating. The term ‘Whiner’ refers to a person, usually a child, who complains or cries continually. I think wh.. -by Ms. Kim

Tips for Teaching in Korea

I just wanted to put out a few tips for people who may be interested in teaching in South Korea. 1. Hogwons (small private schools) are extremely unstable here. Many close without notice, leaving teachers stranded or simply "run out of money," and become unable to pay salaries. 2. Living Conditions are VERY different from western culture. Apartments do not include a separate bedroom, they are studio style and very small. Disregard what your recruiter may tell you, .. -by Michael
